July 18, 2024: A candle in the wind
On a cold dark winter's night
We got a lot done this week! There's so much work to be done here, and it's incredible.
I'll start with Friday. I had my District leader training meeting, and then we basically spent the rest of the day studying and going retro: knocking on doors. We actually had success knocking for the first time in my life! One of the first doors we knocked on was a middle aged lady who said she was busy, but actually gave us a time to come back. Later that day we were visiting some people who had been dropped months or even years ago, and we went to this one apartment, only knowing that the man we were searching for was named Peter. Most of the names on the building are just last names, but we found one that said Peter and went for it. He was a grumpy old man in a wheel chair who had no clue who we were. We were going to leave, but we decided to go and knock the rest of the doors in the apartment, and it turns out that was inspired because there was actually a 2nd Peter two floors down! He recognised us and said we could gladly meet another time. Really cool.
There are so many amazing people we are teaching right now, like seriously, this area is blessed! There are a couple friends we teach who are refugees and they are stuck in camps until they're able to obtain more permanent residency. Many of the camps are Muslim dominated, and it makes it a sacrifice for people to meet with us and to read the bible in the book of mormon. Despite that, there are amazing people who have so much desire to learn about and come closer to christ that they pray and read every day in secret. It inspires me to see their faith and it reminds me of the story of Alma and his people in Mosiah 23-24 as they were suppressed and continued to pray in their hearts.
We have one guy on baptismal date for the 24th of August! I haven't actually met him yet, but his name is Harry and his whole thing is that he wears a 3 piece suit every day, everywhere he goes. I've heard he's super awesome and the members love him.
Our area also covers an American base, so I'm excited to work with them as well. They have a separate ward, and we can't get there until I get my drivers license (Hopefully tomorrow!).
Our district consists of my companion and I, two sister companionships, and two senior missionary couples. We call it a "Sistrict" or "Sister District" because the only young missionary elders are the district leader and his companion. It's a new vibe I've never had in the district so far, but it's going well. The senior missionaries cook for us at district councils so I am happy.
The theme for this week in the majority of the lessons we taught comes from 1st Nephi, Chapter 1, verse 20, the last verse of the first chapter of The Book of Mormon. It states:
"And when the Jews heard these things they were angry with him; yea, even as with the prophets of old, whom they had cast out, and stoned, and slain; and they also sought his life, that they might take it away. But behold, I , Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance." We are teaching so many people with so many different problems. But the Lord has promised that through faith the Lord can make us mighty, even unto the power of deliverance. I know that to be true, not only for those we teach, but for each one of us. As we trust in the lord, believe in him, and try to come unto him, no matter our trial can we be strengthened unto the power of deliverance.
That's it for this week!
Bis nächste woche :)
