October 24, 2024: The world may not know
Hallo! I forgot to write last week, so this may be more of a summary of the last two weeks.
Here is what we have been up to!
- lots of finding and teaching. Hopefully soon baptising as well! We have had a few exchanges and we always stack as many appointments on those days as possible. We try to teach our progressing friends about 2 times a week for 30 minutes each, and so some days we will have ~10 lessons when we have exchanges and it's super cool. Because I am teaching more often and and more concisely than ever before, I'm improving a lot on making my teaching quick and to the point, as well as bold.
- were teaching a new guy Andrés who is a German-Colombian guy. He's super cool and a German bro with actual interest. We had a lesson with him last week, and the member we invited to the lesson got on, and it just so happened that they already buddies from law school together! They hit it off and had no idea that they were both involved in the church. He's making a lot of progress. He came to church on Sunday, and we talked to him a bit and he was just like "so I read online that yall don't drink coffee and alcohol and smoke and stuff, so I have just been trying it out for the last month and I kinda like it". He's literally already keeping the word of wisdom without us asking!
- our sink drain broke for a while and we couldn't do any dishes! Not only that but we didn't have the chance to go shopping at the normal time so we were surviving on scraps... one of our meals was a 10 minute baked potatoe (basically raw, we didn't know), a can of cold kidney beans, and plain baked pizza dough (we had no sauce or cheese or meat). It was hilarious but after a couple days we didn't feel like we had enough nutrients in our bodies, so we went to the store in our preparation hours in the morning. We had to buy precooked food at the store, because of the sink problem, but it was actually pretty tasty.
- we had our first meal appointment in probably months! A senior couple from the ward invited us and the sisters over to eat mini crepes. We had savory and sweet options, and basically just stacked our choice of ingredients on it and made little crepe sandwiches, it was delicious! I probably threw down at least 15 little sandwiches, because we were just coming off of a fast.
- for pday today we went to a beautiful city called Kassel. We trekked up a mountain and visited this massive structure built in like an old greek-roman style from the 1700s, with a massive naked statue of Hercules at the top. It looks like something out of the video-game Elden Ring if you know it. I'm sure there's a boss to be battled in there somewhere. All the trees have turned orange and red and its absolutely beautiful!
- my companion and I decided some of our favorite people are people from Ghana and Nigeria. As soon as you take even a little interest in them and their country, they just cracks up and love you. We also love the Persian people, literally some of the most amazing people and they are ready for the Gospel. We memorized some opening phrases in Persian and they just love it.
- I gave my first talk ever at church without using a set script! And it was all in German as well. It was about the commandments and how they are like trailmarkers on our path back to heavenly father and how he has given then to us out of his love and desire for us to return to Him. It was basically 15 minutes of me rambling in German and quoting stuff but the people seemed to like it so I think it was OK for my first attempt.
I was peeking at my companions notes the other day as we were studying and he wrote something that really stood out to me that I'd like to share with you. He wrote that "Jesus Christ did not suffer and die for us just for if or when we would make mistakes and sin. He suffered and died because he KNEW we would sin, and KNEW we would mess up. His atonement and love is not conditional. Our failures and shortcomings were already measured, and are a part of the plan. So was our redemption, salvation, and exaltation. God knew you would need a Christ, a redeemer, a savior, and an exalter. Through him are all things possible.
Tschüss!
